UK Waste Compliance

Last updated: 3 May 2026

How WTNDigital.com meets the Waste (England & Wales) Regulations 2011 and the UK 2026 Digital Waste Tracking requirements.

1. Regulations we build against

  • Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 — Regulation 12 (waste hierarchy) + Regulation 35 (transfer notes).
  • Environmental Protection Act 1990 — Section 34 Duty of Care.
  • Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 — consignment-note record-keeping.
  • UK Digital Waste Tracking service (DEFRA, effective 2026) — API submission of every waste movement.

3. Who carries the legal responsibility

You do. We’re a tool, not a licence. You remain the registered waste carrier and the data controller for your waste records. We make it easier to do the right thing — we don’t make you compliant by magic.

4. DEFRA Digital Waste Tracking readiness

  • We build against DEFRA Receipt of Waste API v1.0.
  • Every WTN can be submitted in preview mode today and flipped to live as soon as DEFRA publishes the endpoint URL.
  • Submission status (preview / live / failed) shown on every note, plus a tenant-wide readiness widget.
  • Runbook available on request — see DWT_GO_LIVE.md in our docs.

5. Hazardous waste

Hazardous EWC codes (with the * suffix) are flagged in the catalog. Full Hazardous Waste Consignment Note workflow is on the roadmap for 2026 Q3. Until then, record hazardous movements alongside your current consignment-note process.

6. Data retention

See Privacy Policy § 4. Minimum 2 years on WTNs, 3 years on hazardous movements, 7 years on billing records.
